How to use this information

The information is grouped by topic in alphabetical order. To find information about colon cancer scroll down to the colorectal section.

When you have located the topic, select a link that describes what you are seeking. To use the link, left click on the URL and the site should open in a window. You may have to double click the URL, depending on your options.

You may also cut and paste the links into a MS Word 2000 document for later reference. You can open the Word document and click on the URL to open the site (this is not supported in Word 7.0/97 or earlier). Depending on your options, the site may open in the same window as the Word document. If this not acceptable, right click the URL, left click Hyperlink, left click Open in New Window.

The links are listed with the URL first, followed by a short description. The links were tested at the time this FAQ was written. All links are retested periodically using the W3C Link Checker at http://validator.w3.org/checklink/. If you encounter a HTTP 404 error, please post a message on the group identifying the bad link, or wait for it to be picked up in the next test. It will be fixed by the FAQ Maintainer and appear in the next periodic post.

Hypertext search

Two of the greatest innovations brought about by the Internet and the technology age are hypertext and the web browser. This has allowed a person with minimal computer skills to access and find information globally. One of the best ways to locate that information is to use a hypertext search engine such as Google.

To use Google you must first go to http://www.google.com/ once there you can search web sites, images, newsgroups, the Google directory, or news. The most used functions are the web and groups. To use Google click the appropriate tab and put the word or words you are searching for in the box, and click the Google Search button.

When searching Google, it is OK to leave out common words like to, and, of, etc. as they are not indexed.

The placement of words in the box is significant to the search. The first word is given more significance, then less significance to each following word. An example would be the words colon and cancer, Google will return different results depending on the order of those two words.

If you wish to search for a specific term enclose it in quotes. Using "colon cancer" is more specific and returns better results than using colon cancer unquoted. Alternatively, use the Google advanced search http://groups.google.com/advanced_search

The Google directory contains the same information as Google Search, but in a searchable directory. To find information about cancer, go to http://directory.google.com/Top/Health/Conditions_and_Diseases/Cancer/ and click your way to the desired information. To find colon cancer information click on category "Gastrointestinal" and "Colorectal." Two clicks and you're there. Some other major directories are:
